When you see an obese person, you will know that they are obese, but the definition of obese is relative that is it differs for certain purposes .The dictionary meaning of obesity is simply being overweight. Obesity is determined through a formula of Body Mass Index (BMI). A person is said to be obese when his BMI is more than 30. When a person cannot strike a balance between the calories consumed and calories utilized in the form of physical activity then obesity occurs.

Harmful Effects of Obesity

Among adolescents it manifests itself as lowered self-esteem, lesser educational achievement, lower incidence of marriage, and also lower household incomes and finally, higher rates of poverty. Among Children it results in lesser educational achievement, lower self esteem thereby resulting into children moving towards anti social activities.

Causes of Obesity

Genetics and DNA is another cause of childhood obesity. Your parents can also aid in determining your chances of dealing with childhood obesity. If your parents had a problem with weight, chances are you will deal with the same issues. This makes it extremely important that you keep an eye on your children and their habits. DNA can not be changed, but small changes in other areas can make a great deal of difference in your child and their chances of dealing with childhood obesity. Walk to school, run and indulging into physical activities can be of great help in controlling children obesity.

Eating Habits

The eating pattern is the main cause of obesity. Today the concept of wholesome meal has vanished and has been replaced by fast food/ junk food. Today even children prefer more of pizzas, burgers, French fries as compared to salads and vegetables. Children today have a craving for sugary sweet ice creams as dessert and definitely do consider having a bowl full of frits as alternative. And because children learn there eating behaviors primarily from their parents, those with obese parents often turn into obese children. Parents can help their children in choosing better foods when they are young will ensure that they make the same choices as they continue to grow. It is extremely important to control child obesity otherwise these children will grow into obese adults. Healthy choices include fruits and vegetables instead of sugary snacks. Popular choices include carrot and celery sticks, apples, bananas and even salads that include a wide variety of vegetables

Lack of physical Activity:

Lack of Exercise is also another factor leading to obesity. Obesity occurs when there is an imbalance in calories consumed and calories utilized in physical activity. Thus it can also be said that when there is less of physical activity obesity occurs. Children who spend a lot of time watching television will have a greater risk of child obesity than those who go outside to play. Also people working in offices who do very little of physical activity are at a higher risk of being obese. This especially holds true when they are eating unhealthy food and their physical activity is also restricted. Even housewives who do not indulge into any other form of physical activity apart from doing household work also tend to be obese.

Other Factors:
There are several other factors that are beyond the control of the individual. There are also some conditions that might contribute to obesity such as problems with the thyroid gland. Some people have a difficult time dealing with stress so they use food as an option to deal with frustration.

Summary:
Thus, if people focus on eating healthy food then obesity will not be problem. When a person cannot strike a balance between the calories consumed and calories utilized in the form of physical activity then obesity occurs.
