Obesity is a common problem in countries like America, India etc. In America one in every three person is classified as obese. Obesity is a condition where an adult person is not able to maintain a balance between his calories intake and energy expenditure. Thus the person is said to be in an obese condition.
Obesity is determined through a formula called Body mass Index (BMI). If BMI is more than 30, the person is said to be obese.
Since a few years there is a considerable increase in the percentage of obesity in adults. Dining out with friends, convenient take always, kiddie’s fast food treats, family meals. Eating out is simply on a rise for this younger generation. Thus all these factors are mainly responsible for adolescent obesity not only in developed countries like America but also in developing countries.
Fast Food and Restaurants:
For many youngsters and now days even for adult’s fast food is the way of life. Both, adults and youngsters survive only on fast food. Be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner these they will prefer ordering the food from outside, as it is convenient and tasty as well. Also fast food is readily available. Thus all this has resulted in obesity spreading out as an epidemic, which is hard to control. People are just ignorant about the fact that obesity is becoming the leading cause of preventable deaths. One need not be fat; but can prevent it by living a healthier life. Thus correct food choices and regular exercises can be of great aid. Dreadful and preventable diseases like Diabetes are also caused due to obesity.
Making Healthy Food Choices
The only action plan that can help in reducing the link between fast food and obesity in America is to cut back on this type of fast food diet. There has been a tremendous change in preparing food now days. The first and foremost responsibility of parents is to inculcate healthy eating habits right from infancy. They should help their children in selecting right kind of food that is not only tasty but also nutritive as well. Lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, soups, and salads can be introduces in the diet. Also parents should monitor the number of visits of their children to these fast food joints. Fast food is so famous amongst the younger generation, and filled with so many calories, the weight the diet like instead of having biscuits, cookies and French fries for snacks fresh fruits and vegetables can be introduced.
Also when thirsty aerated drinks can be substituted with plain water. Even while dining out these small changes can still be implemented such with appetizers, opt for non-fried items and share selections. Consider adding salads here. Similarly avoid high -fat dressings, creamy cheese and fried croutons. In case of main course dishes baked grilled, sautéed, boiled, poached or steamed items can be ordered.
Exercise is Imperative
Exercise and healthy food both go hand in hand to avoid obesity. Physical activity should be encouraged right from childhood. Children should be encouraged for playing games such as badminton, tennis, football, and swimming rather than playing computer games. And this is a regimen that adults too can follow.
